Brendan's Voyage

HAZSTUDIO 03 / BRENDAN'S VOYAGE

Brendan's Voyage

Brendan's Voyage is a serious game prototype for teaching medieval cultures and Anglo-Norman grammar and vocabulary in a narrative context, placing users in an environment inspired by the art, architecture, and literature of 12th century England and older Irish legends of St. Brendan.

Private Research Contractor
  • Collaborated with faculty across Baylor University and Vanderbilt University to design and develop a Unity-based educational software platform, "Brendan's Voyage," for teaching Ancient French in upper education.
  • Engineered immersive game-based learning modules that reinforced language acquisition through interactive mechanics, including branching dialogue systems and environmental storytelling.
  • Implemented volumetric lighting, dynamic fog, and reactive light/dark environmental effects to strengthen visual immersion and reinforce narrative pacing within learning modules.
  • Developed texture blending pipelines to create seamless, high-fidelity environments that supported the platform's historical and atmospheric authenticity.
  • Built dialogue systems paired with refined audio fidelity to deliver a more natural, immersive language-learning experience.

About

Zachary Haswell is a business strategist, marketer, and entrepreneur who genuinely loves building things. A client relationship, a go-to-market plan, or a new venture from scratch, it's all the same instinct to him. He holds an MBA with a specialization in Business Strategy and has spent his career across sales, business development, and marketing, getting his hands dirty with competitive analysis, market research, and the kind of cross-functional teamwork that turns a good idea into a real one.

Over the years, Zachary has become the person who connects the dots, sitting between customer stakeholders and the sales, operations, and technical teams who need to deliver for them, turning shifting requirements into plans people can actually act on. He's at ease with ambiguity, has a knack for spotting opportunities other people walk right past, and enjoys the whole arc of an idea, from the first sketch to the finished product. He pairs analytical rigor (market analysis, Excel deep-dives) with entrepreneurial instinct, and is just as comfortable shaping a go-to-market deck as he is untangling a stuck issue between internal and external stakeholders to keep things moving.

Outside of work, Zachary's curiosity runs toward European literature and the French language, interests that quietly shape how he thinks about culture, communication, and storytelling in everything he makes. That curiosity rarely sits still: he's currently developing a Lua-based game called Animal Paint Village, picking up SQL and Korean, and playing bass guitar in whatever spare time he can find. He's always looking for new ways to create, whether that means code, music, or something he hasn't tried yet, and that same instinct carries into his entrepreneurial projects, where he's drawn to the overlap of business, creativity, and technology, treating each new venture as a chance to learn something and build it better.
